Irish Medical News

Irish Medical News is an independent quality weekly newspaper for doctors and health professionals working in Ireland.

It was established in 1984 as a 12-page newsletter and has since grown to a glossy full size weekly newspaper of up to 70 pages.

Irish Medical News
is known for its strong news and clinical content and the quality of its contributors. It has broken numerous exclusive health stories of national importance over the years and our news team regularly has its stories picked up by other media outlets and appear on radio and television to discuss breaking health stories.

Our regular columnists offer incisive and often controversial opinions and insights on health and other topics of the day and our letters page offers our readers the chance to share their opinions

Our expanded clinical coverage provides informative, up to date medical and surgical features, research and study updates, and cutting edge clinical management articles, written by the top specialists in their fields.

Contributors

Maureen Browne is one of the country’s most experienced journalists and communications consultants.


 

She has been a columnist with the Irish Medical News since 2005, is Managing Editor of The Consultant (the official journal of the IHCA) and Editor of Health Manager (the official journal of the Health Management Institute of Ireland)


She trained as a journalist with the Limerick Leader & Limerick Chronicle newspapers in Limerick, worked as a senior reporter with the Irish Press Group of Newspapers, reported on Irish affairs for a number of UK newspapers and is a former Editor of Irish Medical Times.


She was Communications Director with the EHB and the ERHA and first Acting National Director of Communications with the HSE before leaving to establish her own business.


She was appointed by the Government to the Second Commission on the Status of Women, is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Worth Library and co-author of Cleared for Disaster, the story of Ireland’s most horrific and mysterious air crashes published in 2006.

 

George Winter was born and educated in Belfast. After a career in laboratory medicine (virology), he became a freelance writer in 2007.

 

In 1999 Emap Healthcare published his textbook “Clinical Virology: a guide for practitioners”. His other clients include the Daily Telegraph, Running Fitness Magazine and Guitar and Bass.

 

He lives in the Scottish Borders, where he enjoys long-distance running and collecting books.

Suicides under-reported

There has been an increase in the under-reporting or misclassification of suicides due to poisoning in recent years, according to a study published in the Spring 2011 edition of The Economic and Social Review. It called attention to the recent increase in the number of deaths from poisoning, which were recorded as accidental deaths (ADs) and “deaths due to events of undetermined intent” (UDs).
