BONNER are looking to recruit an Automation Engineer to work alongside our automation solutions team in our Cork office. This is primarily an Office Based role, but will involve being deployed to work on various client sites for delivering automation related services and projects to our clients Including Diary, Food, Pharma and Manufacturing companies. These projects may be within Ireland but could also involve projects based abroad.  The role will primarily involve working in all stages of a project life cycle including specifications, drawings, design, coding (PLC, SCADA, DCS, HMI’s, Edge, Cloud). Reporting directly to our Automation Manager, you will work alongside experienced automation engineers and support teams to deliver our modern Industry 4.0 solutions to our clients.


  • Involvement in Control system design from concept to handover

  • Programming of PLC, HMI’s,IPC, etc using standards such as Ladder Logic, Sequential Function Chart (SFC) or Python, etc

  • Experience working with ABB’s 800xA DCS or B&R Industrial Automation APROL/Automation Studio is preferable but not essential

  • Implementing controller based projects from start to finish as part of the team and having responsibilities within the life cycle

  • Configuring communication for controllers including remote capabilities and knowledge of common communication protocols OPC UA, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, etc)

  • Developing and implementing custom blocks for coding

  • Conduct FAT’s and SAT’s on projects to high standards

  • Technical support to existing automation projects

  • Attend training with automation vendors to expand knowledge

  • Complete all safety requirements to perform job safely including risk assessment and relevant training.

  • Our customer base includes Food & Dairy, Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Manufacturing


We are looking to identify candidates with strong communication, technical and organisational skills in order to carry out the job requirements. The suitable candidate will have the following skills:

  • Experience with leading brand automation software

  • Detailed knowledge of automation and control systems

  • Experience in modern manufacturing practises for automation projects would be an advantage

  • Understanding of new automation concepts such as Digital transformation, Machine Learning, AI, Robotics, IIOT, Edge, etc

  • Knowledge of requirements of delivering projects to regulated industries would be an advantage

  • Advanced IT skills necessary

  • Organised and a strong attention to detail

  • Proactive

  • Disciplined

  • Honesty and Integrity is an essential

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma level course in Automation, Instrumentation, Electrical, Computer or Engineering related disciplines

  • Minimum 2 years of Automation process control programming experience

  • Other Engineering Related Degree with relevant Experience

  • Full clean driving licence

  • Candidates suitable for this Instrumentation role may have worked previously as:

    • Automation Engineer

    • PLC Programmer

    • Instrumentation & Controls Engineer
