This is what you will do:

The Rare Disease Business Unit’s (RDBU) biopharmaceutical facility in Athlone is home to Drug Substance & Drug Product Operations. This role will be responsible for the operation and management of the Athlone site. The Site Leader will be responsible for EHS, Manufacturing, Tech Services, Operational Excellence, Engineering & Facilities and Projects across the site. This person will be directly responsible for output and budget at a site level across manufacturing and projects. The person in this role will be expected to represent the Athlone site both internally and externally. This senior leadership role is a highly visible position in a dynamic, entrepreneurial, fast-growth Biopharmaceutical company.

You will be responsible for:

  • Principal business owner with accountability for Athlone Manufacturing Operations (Drug Substance, Drug Product & Warehouse) leading a high performance leadership team to include direct and matrix reports and relevant manufacturing support functions.
  • Design the strategy for Athlone Operations to support RDBU’s medium and long term growth ambitions, while always ensuring a compliant and reliable supply of medicines to our patients.
  • Ownership of site operational and capital budget management for Athlone Operations, ensuring smart investment of capital and continuously working to improve and optimize financial performance.
  • Provide visible leadership and communicate importance of strong EHS and Quality Compliance Culture across the site. Take personal accountability and ownership for establishing a strong compliance culture across the operation.
  • Responsible for successful regulatory inspections and ensuring the manufacture of products is performed in a safe, compliant manner, meeting the regulatory requirements defined in relevant health authority submissions, cGMPs and local Health and Safety requirements.
  • Drives strategic plans for site improvements in order to increase efficiency and drive down costs. Maximize the success rate by instituting programs to minimize mechanical failure and procedural error.
  • Communicate site status regularly to Operations Leaders and stakeholders, as required, at the appropriate level of detail. Communications will be both written documents, and in formal and informal oral presentations.
  • Implementing a culture of operational excellence driving to KPIs on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
  • Take ownership for project budget management & timeline adherence.
  • Engaging with and influencing key stakeholders both on site and across the AstraZeneca network.
  • Collaborative approach to partners, in this role you will partner with relevant leaders and key internal stakeholders (Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Technical Operations etc) to advance the Athlone site
  • In this role you will support the Integrated Manufacturing Leader in ensuring effective delivery of best in class manufacturing operations.

You will need to have:

  • A minimum of 12-15 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry having held accountability for the production output from DS/API/DP manufacturing facility
  • Extensive experience managing facilities operations, manufacturing or engineering for a cGMP biotechnology / pharmaceutical facility.
  • Business and supply chain acumen, with financial knowledge to drive a globally competitive supply operation across a broad product portfolio and manufacturing site platform.
  • Sound judgment and comfortable operating in a challenging, fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Innovative, with strong focus and proven experience in delivering continuous improvement through the use of the latest process excellence tools.
  • Strategic and in tune with external environment (competitiveness, generics, regulations etc.)
  • Deep knowledge of regulatory requirements for clinical and commercial biopharmaceutical facilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in developing, motivating, and organizing high performing work groups in the biotechnology / pharmaceutical industry.
  • Ability to see the big picture; to prepare contingency plans and ensure execution of plans through effective organizational delegation
  • Excellent communication skills-both upwards and downwards and outside the company. Ability to lead and communicate orally, in written documents, and in formal presentations is required

We would prefer for you to have:

  • Undergraduate degree in a Science or Engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Advanced degree (Masters, PhD, MBA) is an advantage.
  • Proven leadership skills with demonstrated track record of delivering sustained results and operational improvements.
  • In depth understanding of Logistics/Supply Chain/Inventory management in a commercial and clinical environment.
