·        Leaving Certificate standard of education

·        FETAC Level 5 Healthcare Support certificate or a commitment to undertake same.

·        One year’s continuous experience of working with adults with an intellectual disability.

·        A flexible, committed and caring approach to carrying out the range of duties associated with the post.

Main Purpose of Post

Under the direction of the registered nurse, is responsible for the care, training and supervision of people with an intellectual disability with an emphasis on working with them on an individual level both in the independent living environment and in the continuing care service.

Key Activities

Clients may require assistance in some or all activities of daily living. It is the duty of the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care required by the client. The primary role of the Health Care Assistant is to assist the nurse in the implementation of the care, as determined by the registered nurse. The Health Care Assistant role will vary according to the needs of the individual client, from giving full support for all the activities of daily living, to social support and also being able to work with clients with challenging behaviour needs.


Duties assigned to the Health care Assistants will vary depending on the care setting and will include the following functions. This is not an exhaustive list.

To carry out assigned and delegated tasks involving direct care and all activities of daily living under the supervision of a registered nurse (eg to assist clients maintain standards of personal hygiene, laundry, dietary intake, physical and mental health)

  1. Assisting the registered nurse in the provision of quality nursing service by promoting and adopting a Person Centred Planning approach following the Personal Outcomes Measures quality system.

  1. To provide a home like environment for all clients incorporating all aspects of daily living activities to promote a better quality of life for each person.

  1. To respect and treat each client as an individual in their own right, to maximise their potential and promote independence.

  1. To supervise and implement training and education in its broadest sense either in house or in day activation, to include:

·        Self help skills

·        Social skills

·        Interpersonal skills

·        Domestic skills

  1. To emphasise reintegration into the community through community life skills;

·        Use of money transactions

·        Use of telephone

·        Public transport

·        Supported employment

·        Maintaining a safe working and living environment

  1. To give adequate time and consideration in discussing a common approach to solving problems for clients using a multidisciplinary team approach.

  1. To encourage decision making by residents in the use of leisure time.

  1. To comply with Peamount’s policy on code of dress or uniform policy for different areas of work.

  1. To be willing to drive Peamount’s transport when required to meet the needs of the clients when directed to do so by the CNM.

  1. Health care Assistants should conduct themselves in a manner that conveys respect of the individual and ensures safe client care. The personal characteristics that indicate these principles should include;

The Health Care Assistant must demonstrate and show a willingness to participate in in-service education especially in relation to mandatory courses eg. Safe handling and lifting course and Basic life support for health care providers course.

The Health care assistant will when required be asked to attend other education by the CNM to enhance service delivery.
