Purpose of the Role

To work as part of the multidisciplinary team to deliver a high standard of care to patients within St. James’s Hospital. SACC Ambulatory Care offers the post holder the opportunity to work as part of the team supporting the many specialities throughout the outpatient departments to include Vascular and Plastics incorporating outpatient clinics, minor ops, laser therapies and nurse led wound care clinics. The post holder will be responsible for managing the care of patients and the needs of their families, ensuring that high standard of quality is maintained.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

A Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who is involved in direct patient care with the responsibility of providing the highest standard of evidence based nursing care in partnership with other health care professionals.

  • Responsibilities include assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating nursing care to patients attending the departments including the dressing clinics, using a holistic approach.
  • To develop an understanding of each speciality.
  • Their role is to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients cope with illness.
  • To keep the nurse in charge aware of any relevant changes as they occur.
  • To promote and uphold nursing standards by identifying/recommending changes which will enhance the quality of care.
  • When providing patient care, they observe, assess, and record symptoms, responses, and progress.
  • To participate in discussions regarding treatment needs as appropriate.
  • To develop and update policies and procedures which comply with agreed best practices.
  • Liaise with community services for continuity of patient care.
  • Use relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards of care to all patients.
  • Ensure that accurate documentation and record keeping is maintained.
  • Record all clinical activity.
  • Report and submit adverse incidents as required.
  • To help develop a culture conducive to the establishment and maintenance of good staff morale.
  • To promote a learning environment and encourage professional development.
  • To follow current developments in nursing in order to increase professional knowledge and skills.
  • To ensure own learning needs are met to include relevant study days, courses and PPD participation.

  • Must be Registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)


  • Must have a minimum of six months’ experience (post graduate or undergraduate) in Plastics or Vascular surgical nursing in an acute hospital setting within the past 4 years.

Note: Post holders must maintain annual registration with NMBI.
